Our 8th grade students took part in the Real Money, Real World financial literacy program available through the OSU Extension office recently. Students selected an occupation, which was assigned a gross salary. They learned the difference between gross salary and net monthly salary. They learned how to calculate deductions from their monthly net pay. The pictures below are from the final simulation where community volunteers manned booths for utilities, food, child care, credit card debt, student loan debt (to name a few). Students made further deductions from their monthly pay to cover these various costs. 8th graders loved this, but teachers did hear several surprised gasps at the size of their take-home pay once all the deductions and expenses were paid. Welcome to adulthood kids!
