Meningococcal Vaccine Required for 7th and 8th Graders

St. Mary School

309 East Chestnut St.

Lancaster, Ohio  43130

Dear Parent,

The Ohio Department of Health has added a new immunization requirement for students entering 7th and/or 8th grades.  Your child must have one dose of the meningococcal vaccine prior to the 10th school day of the school year beginning in August 2017.  In addition your child must have the 2nd dose of this vaccine prior to their senior year of high school.  Meningitis is a serious illness and there are several strains of the meningitis bacteria(A, B, C, W, and Y)  This immunization helps to protect your child from getting all except B strain.  At this time there are no requirements for meningococcal B vaccine.  This immunization is called MCV4, Menactra or Menveo.  Your child may have already received this immunization, if so please send me documentation prior to the 10th day of the school year  2017-18.  If your child has not had this immunization you may contact your physician, the Fairfield Department of Health(call 740-652-2800 for an appointment) and I believe some of the local pharmacies carry this vaccine.

I hope you all have a healthy, happy and RELAXING summer break!  I look forward to seeing you and your children in the fall of 2017.

Sincerely,

Debbie Wilson, RN
