Thursday Thoughts – October 27, 2011

Posted by on Oct 28, 2011 in School News, Thursday Thoughts

The end of the first quarter comes this Friday, October 28th. That means that report cards will be given to the students next week either by your child’s homeroom teacher or me. This quarter I am giving reports to grades 3, 6, and 8. I always find it interesting when giving report cards to the students. Students react in different ways when I share the report card with them. Some are visibly upset and nervous when shown their report card while others pretty much know what they are getting and don’t show too much emotion (at least on the outside!). If a student has shown his/her parent their work throughout the grading period (whether it be quizzes, tests, homework, etc.) there won’t be any surprises. I always ask the student if there are any surprises in any of the grades they see and a few will say yes while the majority expected what they got. I think that the reason there isn’t a lot of surprises on the part of the student is that the teacher has communicated with both the student and parent throughout the quarter and made any adjustments necessary along the way. Our teachers communicate often with the parents of their students so there won’t be any surprises at the end of the quarter. Teachers don’t just communicate when things aren’t going right, but also, and just as importantly, they communicate to compliment both the student and parent when things are going good.

One of the things we are looking into is to provide both parents and students with a way where they know exactly where their child is, grade-wise, throughout the grading period. This program would tell both the parent and student what he/she received on quizzes and tests and whether homework assignments were turned in. There are various programs available and we are looking at one that will address our needs at the middle school level. I will keep you up-dated on this issue. Until then, keep asking your child what their grades are in each subject and don’t hesitate to call or email the teacher about your child’s academic progress.
